Help - credit card debt question!?

I am severly behind in my credit cards and now owe quite a bit. Is it better to pay the CC companies something, rather than paying nothing at all. I can pay about 1% but nothing more. I just want to forestall them for awhile because I have a large check coming my way in 18 months.
